Long before digital banners and social media ads, Greece had its own golden age of advertising, a period of bold colours, elegant illustration, and a distinctly Mediterranean charm that still captivates us today. From the 1920s through to the 1970s, Greek commercial art produced some of the most visually striking posters and advertisements ever made.
The Early Years: 1920s–1940s
Greek advertising in the interwar period was heavily influenced by European Art Deco and the French poster tradition. Brands like Fix beer, Loukoumades shops, and early tourism campaigns commissioned artists to create hand-illustrated posters with rich colours and elegant typography. These weren't just ads, they were works of art.
The Greek National Tourism Organisation (EOT) began producing travel posters during this era that would go on to become iconic, images of the Acropolis, the islands, and the Greek sun that defined how the world saw Greece for decades.
The Post-War Boom: 1950s–1960s
The 1950s and 60s were the true golden age of Greek commercial art. Economic recovery brought a surge in consumer brands, soft drinks, cigarettes, ouzo, olive oil, and tourism, all competing for attention with increasingly sophisticated visual campaigns.
Artists like Spyros Vasiliou brought a painterly, almost impressionistic quality to commercial work. Tourism posters from this era, featuring sun-drenched islands, ancient ruins, and smiling locals, became the template for Greek visual identity abroad.
The Style: What Made Greek Ads Unique
Greek vintage advertising had a distinctive visual language:
- Warm, sun-soaked colour palettes : terracotta, cobalt blue, golden yellow, olive green
- Hand-lettered typography : often mixing Greek and Latin scripts with flair
- Idealized imagery : beautiful people, perfect landscapes, timeless scenes
- A sense of optimism : these ads sold not just products, but a way of life
Why We're Still Obsessed With Them
There's a reason vintage Greek ads are having a major moment in interior design. They represent a simpler, more optimistic era and their bold, graphic quality looks stunning on a modern wall. Whether it's an old Ouzo Plomari label, a 1960s EOT tourism poster, or a vintage Fix beer ad, these images carry a warmth and nostalgia that contemporary design rarely achieves.
At Morphē Studio, we've taken inspiration from this golden age to create a collection of vintage-style Greek advertising prints, capturing that same warmth, colour, and Mediterranean spirit for your walls today.
