The capital, Argostoli, is a lively, elegant town rebuilt after the devastating 1953 earthquake, with a strong local identity and excellent food.
The island also has its mysteries: the Melissani Cave, where an underground lake glows turquoise in the midday light, and the Drogarati Cave, a vast cathedral of stalactites with near-perfect acoustics.
