Where Aphrodite Was Born from the Stone
In 1820, a farmer on the island of Milos unearthed a marble statue in his field. It was the Venus de Milo — one of the most famous works of art in human history, now displayed in the Louvre. The island that gave the world this masterpiece is itself a work of art: volcanic, dramatic, and unlike anywhere else in the Aegean.
Milos is not a typical Cycladic island. It doesn't have the postcard-perfect blue domes of Santorini or the party scene of Mykonos. What it has is something rarer — a raw, geological beauty shaped by millions of years of volcanic activity, and a coastline so extraordinary it seems almost impossible.
Sarakiniko: The Moon on Earth
The most iconic landscape on Milos is Sarakiniko Beach — a lunar expanse of white volcanic rock sculpted by wind and sea into smooth, otherworldly formations. There are no palm trees, no sand, no colour except white and blue. It looks like the surface of the moon, and it photographs like nothing else in Greece.
At sunrise or sunset, the light turns the rock gold and pink, and the Aegean glows beneath it. It's one of those places that makes you stop and simply stare.
A Coastline of Wonders
Milos has over 70 beaches — more than almost any other Greek island of its size. Each one is different: coloured cliffs of red, orange, and white volcanic rock; hidden sea caves accessible only by boat; turquoise lagoons sheltered by dramatic headlands.
Kleftiko, in the south of the island, is perhaps the most spectacular — a labyrinth of white rock arches and sea caves that was once a pirate hideout. Approaching it by boat, with the rock formations rising from the water around you, is an experience that stays with you.
The Fishing Villages
Milos also has a quieter, more intimate side. The fishing village of Klima, with its syrmata — colourful boathouses built directly into the rock at the water's edge — is one of the most photographed spots in the Cyclades. The colours are extraordinary: faded blues, reds, and yellows reflected in the still water of the harbour.
It's the kind of scene that belongs on a wall.
