The Cyclades' Best Kept Secret
Andros is the northernmost island of the Cyclades, and in many ways the most surprising. Larger than most of its neighbours, greener, wetter, and wilder, it doesn't fit the postcard image of the Aegean. There are no dusty white plains here — instead, you'll find rushing streams, lush valleys, ancient stone paths, and a landscape that changes with every turn.
It's an island for those who want more than a sunbed. And it rewards them generously.
A Network of Ancient Paths
Andros is one of the best hiking destinations in Greece. The island has an extraordinary network of kalderimi — ancient cobbled mule paths — that connect villages, monasteries, and valleys across the island. Walking these paths is like stepping back in time: the stones are worn smooth by centuries of footsteps, and the views are extraordinary.
The most famous route connects the villages of Aprovato and Menites, passing through terraced hillsides, stone bridges, and dense vegetation. It's unlike anything else in the Cyclades.
Chora: Elegance on a Promontory
The capital of Andros, known simply as Chora, is one of the most elegant towns in the Aegean. Built on a narrow promontory between two bays, it has a distinctly aristocratic feel — neoclassical mansions, marble-paved streets, and a remarkable Museum of Contemporary Art that would not look out of place in any European capital.
The Cycladic architecture is here too, but refined and restrained, as if the island's wealth and culture have always demanded something more considered.
Water, Green, and Light
What sets Andros apart visually is its abundance of water. Springs and streams run through the island's valleys, feeding lush vegetation that turns the landscape a deep, vivid green. In spring, the hillsides are carpeted with wildflowers. In summer, the contrast between the green interior and the deep blue sea is breathtaking.
It's a landscape that photographs like a dream — and looks even better in person.
